Smoke forces TWA flight to land here
HEBRON A TWA flight from St. Louis with 27 passengers landed Monday afternoon at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport with smoke reported in the cabin and cockpit.
No one was hurt.
TWA spokeswoman Julia Bishop said Flight 90, a DC-9, experienced smoke briefly in the cabin and cockpit. No one was hurt and none of the passengers required any treatment. There was no emergency evacuation.
There was no evidence of a fire, she said, and no immediate cause for the smoke was known.
The flight originated in Lincoln, Neb.
One passenger, Greta Burkart of Hamilton, said smoke did not enter the cabin until after the plane had landed. She said she noticed concern in the actions of flight attendants about 10 minutes before landing.
The plane stopped on the runway, with emergency equipment nearby.
The pilot came on and said we had lost all hydraulic pressure on the left side of the plane, she said.
Passengers were then told to leave the plane using the regular exits, and were bused to the terminal.
Burke may co-chair party with Mallory
Tim Burke and Ohio Sen. Mark Mallory would become co-chairmen of the Hamilton County Democratic Party under a plan announced Monday by Mr. Burke.
Mr. Burke said he has reconsidered resigning after five years as chairman. He will recommend at a party meeting later this month that Mr. Mallory be elected co-chairman.
Mark and I over the past four years have developed a remarkably solid ability to communicate with one another and do it with great frequency, Mr. Burke said.
Mr. Mallory, of the West End, defeated Republican Janet Howard in November to win the 9th District seat. His victory was one of the few bright spots in the election for local Democrats.
Mr. Burke praised Mr. Mallory as a skillful political strategist and fund-raiser.
Girl reportedly raped by two men
HAMILTON Police are investigating a report that a 13-year-old girl was raped by two men Sunday.
A relative told police the girl was walking with one of the men along the 600 block of Heaton Street when a second man drove by in a car about 7 p.m.
The driver picked up the couple and drove them to an unknown location, where both males allegedly raped the girl, a police report says.
As of Monday afternoon, no one had been arrested, police said.
Stabbed man lied on report, police say
A couple in Mount Auburn were charged Sunday after the woman allegedly stabbed the man, and the man made a false report of the crime to police.
Lori Bethel, 28, is accused of stabbing Todd Stowers in the left side. She faces a felonious assault charge.
Mr. Stowers, 39, allegedly told police he was stabbed in a robbery. He faces a charge of making a false report.
Cincinnati police are continuing to investigate what led to the stabbing.
Driver who died had been drinking
MORGAN TOWNSHIP A weekend investigation by Butler County deputies has revealed alcohol played a role in Saturday's traffic death of a Ross Township man.
Anthony Telinda, 19, was killed about 1:35 a.m. Saturday when his car collided head-on with another on Ohio 126 (Cincinnati-Brookville Road) in Morgan Township.
Mr. Telinda's eastbound Pontiac Bonneville went left of center and struck a Mazda driven by Zachary Hoock, 16, of Okeana.
After the impact, Mr. Telinda's car was left sitting sideways in the eastbound lane. The car was then struck broadside by a pickup driven by Marvin Stone, 51, of Brookville, Ind.
Mr. Telinda was dead at the scene.
None of the others involved in the crash was seriously injured, sheriff's Capt. Michael Grimes said.
We attribute that to the air bags and seat belts, he said.
Mr. Telinda was not using any restraints in his vehicle. Their use could have minimized injury and possibly his death. We have since learned that he was impaired by alcohol.
Teen charged in store robbery
SYMMES TOWNSHIP A juvenile was arrested early Monday after a foot chase and charged in the robbery of a Wal-Mart.
The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said the juvenile used a pellet gun to shoot out a glass jewelry case and took several items from the store at 9365 Fields Ertel Road.
The juvenile was confronted by a female employee, but pushed her aside and fled. He dropped the weapon as he ran out.
Several sheriff's patrol units chased the youth before catching him on Mason Way Court.
He was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.
