Taft coach had good record before arrest

The Cincinnati Enquirer

A Taft High School gym teacher accused of kissing a teen-age girl in a car Saturday has received favorable job evaluations since his 1990 hiring, although school records show that he was admonished for “combative” interactions with students during an earlier stint as a substitute teacher.

Cincinnati police charged Christopher Givens, 33, with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after an officer found him kissing a 16-year-old Withrow High School student in a car in Walnut Hills, police say.

Mr. Givens, who also is head boys basketball coach at Taft, was reassigned Monday to Cincinnati Public Schools' transportation department and has no contact with students, pending the outcomes of police and district investigations.

According to district personnel records, Mr. Givens has been an “excellent” employee. The only controversies in his records arose from accusations students made when he was a substitute teacher at Bloom Middle School in late 1989.

Then, a student claimed Mr. Givens challenged him to a fight after the teacher questioned why he hadn't completed class work. In a separate incident, three female students complained that he had called them “gay.” In a third allegation, a student said Mr. Givens kicked him with his knee.

In a written rebuttal, Mr. Givens denied the allegations and said they were made by “notoriously disruptive students,” district records show. Mr. Givens' file does not indicate whether he was disciplined, other than being admonished “not to be so combative and demanding of students.”

Mr. Givens couldn't be reached Wednesday for comment.
