Child pornography case has trial date

The trial of William Garvey is set for April 6 before U.S. District Judge S. Arthur Spiegel. He pleaded not guilty a week ago to 64 federal charges of child pornography.

The trial date for the 78-year-old retired Mount Lookout man was set Wednesday.

A federal grand jury indicted Mr. Garvey on charges of inducing minors — at least six teen-age girls — to pose for child pornography. The investigation began last year after a girl told police he had been taking explicit pictures of her and her friends.

If convicted, Mr. Garvey faces 10 to 20 years in prison on each of 32 counts of inducing minors and up to 15 years on each of 32 transportation charges.

His 1991 van and 1994 Acura sedan have been seized.

Five arrested on I-71 after marijuana robbery
Five men were arrested early Wednesday morning on Interstate 71 in Norwood less than 30 minutes after they allegedly robbed a house at gunpoint in the 200 block of Lyons Street in Clifton.

Arrested at 12:05 a.m. were: Russell Hunt, 19, of Clifton Heights; Jeremy Friedman, 19, Blue Ash; Alexander Hardin III, 19, of Pleasant Ridge; Dan Richardson, 20, and Andrew Kay, 22, both of Clifton.

The robbery occurred at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday. No one was injured. Police said a group of men rang the doorbell, entered the house at gunpoint and ordered the occupants to the floor. They left with about 1,800 grams of marijuana.

Each man is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of drug abuse. Police said Mr. Friedman drove the car in which police found the marijuana.

A police report stated “Mr. Hunt was the key person — he had knowledge of the drugs in the house and where it was. He told the others where to look and planned the event. The drugs were given to him after the robbery.” Mr. Kay is also charged with violating probation.

The five men will appear in court at 9 a.m. today at the Hamilton County Justice Center.

City act promotes high-speed railway Cincinnati City Council members Wednesday took the next step in making a high-speed commuter train from Cincinnati to Chicago a reality.
Mayor Roxanne Qualls and Councilman Todd Portune introduced a motion asking the city administration to work with the Ohio Rail Development Commission in applying for grants for initial studies for a high-speed corridor. It also calls for identifying a site close to downtown Cincinnati that would work as a train station.

Last week, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater designated the Cincinnati-Indianapolis-Chicago corridor as an extension of the Chicago Hub High Speed Rail Corridor. That makes the states eligible for federal money.

Restaurant robbed during dinner hour MASON — Police are searching for a masked man who robbed the New China Restaurant at the height of dinner hour Tuesday.
Witnesses told Mason police that the suspect, wearing black clothes and a black ski mask with a red stripe, entered the Reading Road restaurant at 6:11 p.m., flashed a handgun and demanded cash.

Only three employees were in the restaurant at the time. The robbery occurred minutes after a couple of police officers had picked up a take-out order, Detective Patrick Ellis said Wednesday.

“A person was just walking in when this occurred. She heard "robbery' and "gun' and ran out and dialed 911 from her cell phone,” he said.

An employee took about $200 from the register and handed it to the robber, who fled through the back door, Detective Ellis said. No one was injured.

Luxury apartments in Oakley rejected
Cincinnati City Council rejected an effort to build a luxury apartment complex on Eastern Hills Lane in Oakley and told city planners to put a hold on any construction on the property.

Medve Group, a St. Louis developer, wanted to construct a $24 million, 200-unit apartment complex on Eastern Hills Lane, but needed city council to change zoning from manufacturing to residential. Wednesday, council voted 8-1 to reject rezoning. It also passed a motion asking the City Planning Commission to declare the area an “interim development control district” — meaning that nothing can be done on the property until there is a review of any future use and its effect on the neighborhood.

Early on Jan. 22, about 100 federal agents and police officers began searching Lockland and Lincoln Heights locations, culminating a four-month investigation.

Mr. Goins was one of the last of those indicted to be arrested.

Of those named in the sweep, Mr. Goins and 15 others were charged under federal statutes with conspiracy with intent to distribute, and distributing more than 5 grams of crack cocaine. The remaining 14 were charged under state statutes.

Lt. governor gets warning for speeding COLUMBUS, Ohio — Lt. Gov. Maureen O'Connor, who also serves as Ohio's top public safety official, was given a warning for speeding in northeast Ohio in December, a State Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Mrs. O'Connor, who was elected along with Gov. Bob Taft on Nov. 3, was pulled over on Interstate 71 on Dec. 21, patrol spokesman Lt. John Born said Wednesday. While the car was on the freeway's shoulder, it slipped out of gear and rolled backwards and bumped the patrol cruiser, slightly damaging her car, Lt. Born said. The cruiser was not damaged and Mrs. O'Connor was not cited for the accident, he said.
