Ohio 73 widening at Franklin moves forward

FRANKLIN A long-awaited upgrade of Ohio 73 from near Meadowview Drive west to Riley Boulevard at the edge of downtown is moving a step closer to reality.
City council this week approved engineering, surveying and right-of-way acquisition to widen the road from three lanes to five. About 28,000 cars a day pass through the intersection of Ohio 73 and Riley. The upgrade is needed to improve traffic flow.
The city will receive about $1 million in state money for the $1.34 million project, said Franklin Mayor James Mears. The city will pick up the rest of the tab.
It'll be a welcome improvement, the mayor said. We've been working on this for probably six years.
This Warren County city has grown steadily in recent years. Its population has increased from 11,026 in 1990 to about 12,000 today, an increase of almost 9 percent.
Ohio 73 is congested during the morning and evening rush hours as drivers use it to get to and from Interstate 75. Each afternoon, long lines of cars clog the road as drivers head into Franklin.
Fred Gossman, city engineer, said plans for the upgrade should be finished by July and work should begin in midsummer. The project should be completed in the first half of 2000.
