Suspect slain in shootout

Stickup leads to cop chase down I-75

BY JANE PRENDERGAST
The Cincinnati Enquirer

WILLIAMSTOWN — A Frankfort man died Thursday morning after he was shot by Grant County sheriff's deputies following the robbery of a gas station.

It was the second time in about 14 hours that a Northern Kentucky law enforcement officer exchanged gunshots with a robbery suspect.

Kenneth Hutcherson, 53, allegedly went into the Cintro Express BP station just off Interstate 75 in Williamstown and demanded that the clerk give him money. He then fled in his car down the highway, authorities said, while the clerk called 911.

A sheriff's deputy saw the car a few minutes later, about 11:15 p.m., and began chasing it on I-75 at high speeds, Sheriff Randy Middleton said. Other deputies joined the chase, following Mr. Hutcherson as he got off the highway at the Sadieville exit in Scott County, about 20 miles south of Williamstown. He headed west on Ky. 32, then went off the road into a field.

It was there that, the sheriff said, Mr. Hutcherson aimed his gun at deputies and fired. Three deputies fired back. The deputies were not injured.

Mr. Hutcherson was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where he died. The sheriff did not say how many times the accused robber had been hit by the deputies' bullets or who the deputies were.

“From all indications, he fired first. That is what the deputies said, and that is what witnesses said,” said Trooper Rick Devers of the state police in Frankfort.

In the other shooting incident Wednesday, Covington Police Officer Mike McGuffey returned fire at one of three accused bank robbers. Two of them had shot at him first, police said. None of the bullets hit anyone.
