Teacher accused of sex with student

BY TOM O'NEILL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

BATAVIA — A Batavia High School history and drama teacher was held in lieu of $20,000 bond Thursday, accused of sexual battery against a 17-year-old student three years ago.

John Walker, 45, of the 3800 block of Greenbriar Road, Batavia, is being held in Clermont County Jail and did not appear at his bond hearing in municipal court. Hamilton County assistant prosecutor Rick Gibson was appointed special prosecutor because of a conflict of impartiality with Clermont County prosecutors.

Mr. Walker is the brother of Judge William Walker of Clermont County Common Pleas Court. Mr. Gibson said there was no other reason he was brought in.

According to court documents, Mr. Walker had sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old girl on March 24, 1996. The statute of limitations on the third-degree felony charge is six years.

Mr. Gibson confirmed that the girl, who later graduated from Batavia High, was a student in a class taught by Mr. Walker. Police were initially notified by someone other than this student.

School officials Thursday referred all questions to attorney George Roberts, who also refused to comment.

Mr. Gibson said the charges involve only one alleged incident with one student, but “we're investigating whether there were other incidents with that student or any other students.”

A preliminary hearing was set for Thursday.
