MIGHTY DUCKS 4, ADIRONDACK 1

Ducks win 5th in row

BY DAVE HELLER
Enquirer contributor

The Mighty Ducks got goals from defensemen Dan Trebil and Scott Ferguson and limited Adirondack to 20 shots in beating the Red Wings 4-1 Friday night in the American Hockey League at the Gardens.

“(Coach) Moe (Mantha) was talking before the game that we need to keep (opponent's shots) under 30, so we all tightened up,” Trebil said. “Whoever you get the goals from it's nice, but it's always nice when the D-men pop a few in, though.”

The win was Cincinnati's fifth in a row for a franchise record. That mark ties the Ducks for the fifth best streak in the AHL this season.

Cincinnati has won seven of its last eight games, outscoring opponents 35-13 in that stretch.

“I don't think guys are too fired up about it,” defenseman Mike Crowley said. “Obviously we want to win games and we have a good thing going, but we still have 30 games left plus the playoffs, so we can't get too high or low.”

Ferguson gave Cincinnati a 2-1 lead during a delayed penalty with his third goal of the season.

The Ducks used a delayed penalty again to their advantage when Igor Nikulin scored with 16 seconds to play in the period.

Trebil helped the Ducks score a back-breaking goal in the third period. Moments after Trebil saved the puck from leaving the offensive zone, Bob Wren scored on a rebound off a Mike Leclerc shot for a 4-1 lead.

Ducks goalie Tom Askey ran his personal win streak to seven games.

“(Askey) didn't have to make the big saves because our defense of keeping everybody on the outside,” Mantha said. “They maybe got a couple of good scoring chances, but as a we played solid as a defensive unit.”
