N.KY. BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP


Late Newport rally upsets Holmes 68-65

        Senior Pete Greene scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as Newport, ranked No.5 in The Enquirer's Northern Kentucky coaches poll, overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to upset No. 2 Holmes, 68-65, at Newport Friday night.

        Greene finished with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Fellow senior Johnny Bonner scored 20 points, 18 of them in the second half. Senior guard Brian Kuntz totaled 13 points and nine assists.

        Newport won despite a 27-point performance by Holmes junior guard Al Huff.

        • Lloyd 69, Ryle 62, at Lloyd — Lloyd missed 20 free throws, but still managed to escape with the victory.

        Lloyd made only 25-of-45 from the foul line, including 12-of-23 from the stripe in the fourth quarter.

        Dwyane Smith led Lloyd with 20 points.

        Ronnie Dawn scored 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer that sent the game into overtime for Newport Central Catholic.

        Todd Rassman scored a game-high 21 points to lead the winners, while Jason White and Jake Doolin scored 14 points apiece. Doolin added 15 rebounds.
