Photo staffers win Ohio honors

The Cincinnati Enquirer photo staff has won 10 awards in the 1998 Pictures of the Year competition sponsored by The Ohio Newspaper Photographers Association.
The awards were announced Saturday in Columbus.
An exploration of religion in the Tristate won three awards for photographer Steven M. Herppich, including first place in the pictorial category for the image, Islamic Woman Climbing Stairs. The year-long project also won Mr. Herppich second place in the Ohio Understanding category. Another single image from the series, Community Prayer, from a Baptist Easter celebration, garnered Mr. Herppich third place in the single feature category.
Yoni Pozner took top honors in the Picture Feature Story, for her Grandma project, an extended photo story on Joan Miller and her work with Brothers and Sisters of the Little Way.
Other Enquirer winners were:
Saed Hindash took second place behind Mr. Herppich in the pictorial category for Garlic Harvest, a feature on the herb that appeared in the Taste section. Mr. Hindash also took third place in the sports category for Squashed, showing a football fumble during the Newport Central Catholic game against Ludlow High School.
Michael E. Keating won two honorable mentions in the sports category including Dunked, showing Xavier University's Torraye Braggs dunking a basketball and for Hoofing It, from the American Jumping Classic trials at Turfway racetrack. He also took an honorable mention in general news for Can't We Get Along? an image from the Taft/Fisher gubernatorial debate.
Glenn Hartong received an honorable mention for his image of a police officer silhouetted against the memorial for fallen police officers Ronald Jeters and Daniel Pope.
The Toledo Blade was named photo staff of the year and Mike Levy of The Plain Dealer was named photographer of the year.
