Cincinnati Pops Riverbend season




        Stage and screen star Debbie Reynolds and musical comedian Victor Borge are two of the headliners in the Cincinnati Pops' 1999 Riverbend season.

        Ms. Reynolds will open the Cincinnati Pops Riverbend season with Pops conductor Erich Kunzel.

        Mr. Borge, 90, known as “the great Dane,” recently celebrated the 70th anniversary of his first performance. He'll conduct the orchestra from his piano bench.

        The season also features Quartetto Gelato, which performs an array of music on oboe, violin, viola, cello, accordion, guitar and mandolin. CSO associate conductor John Morris Russell will lead “Symphantasy XII,” a Riverbend Family Concert (June 26) and the July 4th Concert. The latter stars the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors.

        The Pops' Riverbend concerts start at 8:30 p.m. The Riverbend Family Concert is at 11 a.m.

        June 18-19 — Erich Kunzel, conductor; Debbie Reynolds, entertainer. The star of musicals such as Singin' In the Rain and The Unsinkable Molly Brown will sing and dance through the glory days of Hollywood musical films.

        June 25-26 — Victor Borge conducts his own routine.

        July 2-3 — “Symphantasy XII.” John Morris Russell, conductor; Quartetto Gelato; The McGing Irish Dancers; Michael, Christos and Andres Palassis, Greek Dancers; Jack Frost Accordion Band; Kolping Society Saengerchor; Donauschwaben Schuhplattlers; Cincinnati Studio Cloggers; Command Performers: Italian and Spanish Production.

        July 9-10 — “The Classic Musicals of Rodgers & Hart and Rodgers & Hammerstein.” Erich Kunzel, conductor; Kathleen Brett, soprano; Geoffrey Butler, tenor; Daniel Narducci, baritone; The May Festival Summer Chorus, Robert Porco, director.

        July 16-17 — “The Phantom of the Opera.” Erich Kunzel, conductor; Cynthia Watters, soprano; Mark McVey, tenor; Dennis James, organist. Music from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Broadway musical; plus the 1925 silent film with orchestra and theater organ virtuoso Dennis James.

        July 4th Concert — “A Salute to America.” John Morris Russell, conductor; United States Army Jazz Ambassadors; Rozzi's Famous Fireworks. Includes the music of Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller, Motown, patriotic hits and 1812 Overture.

        June 26 Family Concert — “CSO Sound Safari.” John Morris Russell, conductor. Includes Carnival of the Animals.

        Subscriptions: Pops Series I (five Friday night concerts) or Pops Series II (five Saturday night concerts): $135 ($160 RSViP Club) section A pavilion; $115 ($140 RSViP Club) section B pavilion. Lawn subscriptions: $60.

        Single tickets: $28 (B pavilion); $33 A pavilion); $15 lawn.

        July 4th: $15 all seats.

        Family Concert: $9 adults; $4.50 children. The CSO and Coney Island offer a $5 deal for adults and children for the concert and Sunlite Pool.

        Summerpass coupons: Six pavilion coupons for $132, redeemable for any CSO or Pops subscription concert.

        Grasspass coupons: 10 lawn coupons for $110, redeemable for lawn seats to any CSO or Pops subscription concert.
