YMCA plans to open four Dearborn Co. facilities
BY RACHEL MELCER
The Cincinnati Enquirer
With two pools and two recreation centers, the Greater Cincinnati YMCA is investing in the four corners of its Dearborn County, Ind., district.
Under a capital improvement plan just getting under way, the Y will build an outdoor pool in Harrison and an indoor aquatic center in Lawrenceburg. Multipurpose classroom and athletic centers are planned for Aurora and Bright.
I think this will do a lot to focus the area as a single region, rather than as a lot of small communities that are really separated, said Ed Cheek, a Greater Cincinnati YMCA/Dearborn County Branch board member and strategic planning committee chairman.
A single membership will provide access to all four sites.
We really feel we're (going to be) serving as many people as possible, branch executive Merilee Meschefske said. We feel that it's a great solution for the uniqueness of Dearborn County and the way it's ... geographically challenged, Ms. Meschefske said, outlining the plan:
Beginning this summer, the YMCA will assume a two-year lease with an option to buy the Miami Whitewater Swim Club at 10630 Campbell Road, Harrison. The site will be renovated and renamed the Dearborn County YMCA Family Aquatic Center of Harrison.
Officials hope to open a fitness and multipurpose facility in early 2000 in a building that used to house Aurora High School.
The YMCA will build an indoor swimming facility and outdoor soccer fields on 10 acres off U.S. 50. The property and an $800,000 construction grant are being donated by the city of Lawrenceburg, and the SAY Soccer Association will help maintain the fields.
A new recreation and classroom building will be built in Bright, either at the end of 2000 or in the early months of 2001.
Total investment at the four sites will be an estimated $2.25 million, not including the value of the donated property or Lawrenceburg's cash contribution, Mr. Cheek said.
