Berry's last day
Wilford Lee Berry Jr. arrived at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility at Lucasville Thursday night. The prison holds the death chamber.
Mr. Berry had been imprisoned at the Corrections Medical Center in Columbus since he was beaten by fellow death-row inmates during a September 1997 riot.
The final day:
7:15 a.m.: He eats breakfast (boiled egg, cereal, juice, milk, apple, orange.
8:05 a.m.: He showers, returns to a holding cell 35 feet from the death chamber. He declines to meet with his mother and sister.
10 a.m.: He meets with Cynthia Yost, an assistant public defender who befriended him while he was on death row.
11 a.m.: He eats lunch (fish, creamed potatoes, fruit cocktail, coleslaw, bread, punch).
2 p.m.: The U.S. Supreme Court denies an emergency review of the case. The public defender representing his mother and sister says no appeal options remain.
3 p.m.: He is served his final meal (lasagna, garlic bread, cheesecake, Pepsi).
4:55 p.m.: He meets with his mother and sister until 6:10 p.m.
8 p.m.: He showers, dresses in blue trousers and a white, short-sleeved white pullover.
8:30 p.m.: The warden explains the execution procedure to Mr. Berry.
About 8:45 p.m.: The prison establishes phone communications with the governor's office.
9 p.m.: The warden and execution team read aloud the death warrant outside his holding cell and lead him to the gurney. Two medical technicians insert intravenous lines.
9:31 p.m.: Mr. Berry is pronounced dead.
