Newport leaders to visit business areas

BY TERRY FLYNN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

NEWPORT — City leaders are planning a field trip — not to the zoo or the museum — but to neighborhoods on both sides of the Ohio River to find out what other towns are doing with their commercial districts.

Four cities on tour
Members of the Monmouth Street Commission will be joined by city commissioners, business owners, city staff and other interested parties for a daylong jaunt Feb. 27 that will take them to:

        • Covington's MainStrasse Village and Madison Avenue areas.

        • Fairfield Avenue in Bellevue, better known as “The Avenue.”

        • Mount Lookout Square, Hyde Park Square, O'Bryonville, Clifton's gaslight district, and Northside, all in Cincinnati.

        • The Cincinnati suburb of Montgomery.

“Part of what we will be doing is looking at the business mix in other areas of Greater Cincinnati,” Newport Main Street coordinator Eric Avner said. “We want to see what works and compile a list of business types we might want to recruit, and also do some idea gathering. We aren't really looking to copy anything.”

Another significant point the group will consider is whether two-way traffic works in the other neighborhoods. Newport is seriously considering making Monmouth Street a two-way street. It now runs one way north from 11th Street to Third Street.

Lots to look at
The field-trippers also will look at signs in the other commercial districts, take in the effect of streetscape and facade improvements, and compare the availability of parking.

Mr. Avner said Newport may be the only community in this region embracing the “Main Street” approach to for its commercial business district.

The field trip will begin at 9 a.m. at the city building at 10th and Monmouth, and will conclude with dinner at 7 p.m. at the original Montgomery Inn restaurant on Montgomery Road.
