N.KY. BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP


Highlands wins 10th straight

        Highlands, ranked No.1 in the Enquirer's boys basketball coaches poll, finished its regular season Friday on a 10-game winning streak after beating visiting Lloyd 63-39.

        The Bluebirds open 36th District play against No.4 Newport at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Newport Central Catholic.

        Highlands (19-6) shot 52.3 percent Friday, increasing its lead each quarter to gradually pull away. Mr. Basketball candidate Derek Smith totaled 24 points and 10 rebounds, and fellow senior Joe Herald totaled 14 points.

        Senior forward Jared Lorenzen, hobbled by an ankle injury, made the start on Senior Night in a ceremonial role. He scored one quick basket and then sat out the rest of the night to rest for next week.

        Lloyd (19-6) begins 34th District play at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at Scott, playing the winner of the Beechwood-Villa Madonna game.

        • Simon Kenton 79, Campbell County 47, at Campbell County — Simon Kenton, the Enquirer's No.2 team, ended the regular season with a strong road victory.

        Senior guard Eric Washnock led Simon Kenton with 13 points, while Northern Kentucky University signee Brenden Stowers and reserve Brad Arrowood added 13 points each.

        Simon Kenton (23-4) opens 33rd District play at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at Conner, facing the winner of the Conner-Heritage Academy game.

        • Newport Central Catholic 73, Conner 55, at NCC — Brian Veneman and Jon Vinson celebrated Senior Night by combining for 27 points and 20 rebound to lift the Throughbreds.

        Veneman scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Vinson added 11 points and 13 boards to lead the "Breds (16-11).

        NewCath only led by four, 47-43, entering the final period before a 26-12 run put the game away.

        Vince Bonhaus added 13 points and Tony Bacigalupo 10 for NewCath.

        • Bishop Brossart 61, Ryle 56, at Ryle — Curtis Bezold's 10-footer with 52 seconds left gave Brossart a 54-52 lead, and the visitors hung on.

        Bezold finished with 15 points, while teammate Justin Seiter scored a game-high 16 points. Mike Setters scored 13 to lead Ryle. It was the season finale for both schools.

        • Covington Catholic 67, Boone County 54, at CovCath — Mickey Fritz scored nine of his 14 points in the third quarter to lead the Colonels.

        Fritz, Jarrod Overmann (15), Steve Purdon (12), and Jim Hiltz (11) all scored in double figures for CovCath

        The Rebels were paced by Nathan Madden with 18.

        • Holy Cross 67, St. Henry 48, at Holy Cross — Senior guard Ted Arlinghaus connected on 8-of-15 three-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points to pace No. 5 Holy Cross.

        Arlinghaus drained four three-pointers in the third quarter to help the Indians open a 14-point lead. Tim Volpenhein added 16 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks for Holy Cross.

        Senior guard Keith Schuler scored 15 points, including his 1,000th career point, in the fourth quarter.
