Taft sidesteps endorsing Kasich
BY PAUL BARTON
Enquirer Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON Gov. Bob Taft was given the chance to endorse a fellow Ohioan for president on Sunday but avoided it.
Mr. Taft, a Republican, was asked by reporters whether he was willing to endorse Rep. John Kasich, a Republican from Westerville, for the 2000 GOP presidential nomination.
It is too early for me to deal with that, he said. Mr. Taft's comment came during the winter meeting of the National Governors' Association as other Republican governors could be seen right and left giving interviews about what a good candidate they thought Gov. George W. Bush of Texas would be. Mr. Bush is regarded as the front-runner for GOP nomination.
Mr. Kasich announced last week that he had formed a presidential exploratory committee, a major step toward a candidacy.
Certainly it is good Ohio has someone involved (in the race), Mr. Taft said. I certainly have encouraged John to get involved. He has a lot to offer.
