Fire at Scout camp considered suspect
A fire Tuesday night, considered suspect, destroyed the dining hall at Camp Friedlander near Loveland and is being investigated by the Miami Township fire and police departments, Clermont County fire investigation task force and the state fire marshal.
Miami Township Fire Chief Jim Whitworth said a damage estimate will be determined later. He said the fire was well under way when calls came in about 9 p.m. from neighbors across Ibold Road from the Dan Beard Boy Scouts of America Camp in Clermont County.
He said when the first units arrived at the building, flames were coming from the roof of the dining hall. In less than 10 minutes after they arrived, one of the walls collapsed, Chief Whitworth said.
Neighbors reported seeing juveniles running from the camp.
Camp officials announced plans this week to renovate the facility after receiving a $1 million donation from the Firstar Corp. on Monday.
The camp is along the Little Miami River, and plans call for $14.5 million in renovations of the more than 500 acres of the camp. Part of the renovation would include a 20-acre lake that would replace a pond.
Pat Brown, director of operation for the council, said the area destroyed by the fire was scheduled to be converted to a program facility.
We will probably build a new dining hall and still convert the old destroyed dining hall into a program facility, Mr. Brown said. He said the new dining hall will not be ready by June when camping starts.
We are talking with the National Guard about using their facility nearby, Mr. Brown said. If that doesn't work, we will talk with someone else with facilities nearby.
