Pilarczyk: Faith needs practice to stay vital

BY JULIE IRWIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

People of faith are like musicians, the Most Rev. Daniel E. Pilarczyk writes in his new book. What they do not practice, they tend to lose.

For Archbishop Pilarczyk's flock in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, that means carrying out the daily requirements of the Catholic faith. The archbishop outlines the practices, and the purposes behind them, in Practicing Catholic (St. Anthony Messenger Press; $6.95).

Archbishop Pilarczyk will speak and sign copies of his book today at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Norwood.

The 88-page book is a sequel to the archbishop's best-selling Thinking Catholic, published last year.

In Practicing Catholic, he explores the religious practices that express and strengthen the faith of Roman Catholics — including going to Mass on Sundays, receiving sacraments, being married and raising children in the church and being an active member of a parish.

“Being a practicing Catholic is not a matter of going through a complicated series of special motions in order to keep God aware of us, but of engaging in a whole style of life that will keep us aware of God, receptive of what God is giving us, attentive to what God entrusts to us to hand on to others,” he writes.

“It means being conscious of and responsive to the presence and action of the Lord in the Church, in ourselves and in the world around us.”

Archbishop Pilarczyk will speak at 7 p.m. at Joseph-Beth in Rookwood Pavilion, Madison and Edwards roads; 396-8960.
