CINCINNATI GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

Mercy finishes Harrison's season

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
Enquirer contributor

When Angie Heintz gets the ball, the 5-foot-11 Mercy sophomore thinks of only one thing.

“Coach (Mary Jo) Huismann tells me to be aggressive,” Heintz said. “I like to score and when I get the ball, I shoot.”

Heintz got the ball with less than 20 seconds remaining Thursday in Mercy's Division I sectional championship game against previously undefeated Harrison and knew exactly what to do.

Taking a pass from Angie Zeuch, Heintz scored with 19.8 seconds remaining, sealing the Bobcats' 48-43 victory over Harrison in the Cincinnati Division I sectional championship game at North College Hill.

Mercy plays in a district championship game March 6 at noon against the winner of Monday's Beavercreek-Xenia game.

“We were only leading by one point, and you can't pull it back,” Huismann said. “I told the girls during a timeout to keep working the ball and get the shot.”

Zeuch, a junior guard, also played an important role down the stretch, scoring a field goal with 3:21 remaining to push the Bobcats into a 42-41 lead.

During the next two plus minutes neither team scored while combining for six turnovers. Zeuch then sank two free throws with 50.1 seconds remaining for a 44-41 advantage.

Erika Schmitt countered for Harrison with a rebound and basket with 37.1 seconds remaining, setting the stage for the field goal by Heintz and two free throws by Jamie Schoenfeld with 7.7 seconds remaining.

Harrison brought a 22-game winning streak into the game.

Poor free throw shooting was Harrison's downfall. The Wildcats made only 17-of-32 and missed six front ends of one-and-one bonus free throws.

        • Colerain 57, Oak Hills 48, at NCH — It was uncharted waters for the Colerain girls basketball team and first-year coach Chris Trentman wasn't sure how the players would handle the pressure.

“Young teams usually commit turnovers under pressure,” Trentman said. “But these girls handled it well tonight.”

Tied 34-34 after three quarters, Colerain rallied during the fourth quarter to pull out a victory over Oak Hills in a Division I sectional championship game.

The Cardinals advanced to a district championship game against Princeton at Wilmington College. It was Colerain's first sectional title since the 1980-81 season.

“After we pulled ahead early in fourth quarter, we got into their heads,” Colerain sophomore center Quanita Hailey said.

Hailey played an important role in the victory.

A 6-foot sophomore center, Hailey grabbed rebounds on two missed free throw attempts and scored during the final 44 seconds after the Highlanders had pulled within two at 48-46.

        • Princeton 50, Milford 36, at Lakota East — Kori Strange came off the bench to score eight points for Princeton in the Cincinnati Division I lower bracket sectional final.

A year ago, Strange was a starter for Princeton. Then she tore her ACL and slipped well back into Princeton's deep bench.

        “Tonight was gratifying,” said Strange.

        Milford finished 16-6.
