N.KY. BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

Campbell County pushes No. 1 Brossart to limit

BY RAY SCHAEFER
Enquirer contributor

FALMOUTH, Ky. — Near the end of Thursday's girls 38th District basketball game between Bishop Brossart and Campbell County, Brossart coach Ray Kues told his team to just get out of Pendleton County High School with a win.

The Lady 'Stangs did. Sophomore guard Katie Schwegmann's 23 points led a 63-50 win.

Brossart, ranked first in The Enquirer poll, second in the Cantrall survey and fourth in the Associated Press poll, meets Bracken County in the finals at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Lady Bears eliminated Pendleton County 62-45.

Both advance to the 10th Region tournament next week at Bourbon County.

Brossart won its 21st straight game. But to hear Kues, one would think the Lady 'Stangs lost.

“I think they outplayed us, out-hustled us,” Kues said. “We were fortunate to win. I don't think we were properly mentally prepared for the game.”

Campbell County coach Ed Cravens has not seen Brossart's regional rival, state No. 1 Montgomery County, but ...

“Brossart has all the tools,” Cravens said. “They're solid, they rebound well, they shoot from outside.”

There was a lot about which Brossart should be pleased: Senior forward Cara Kopp scored 15 points; she and Schwegmann both grabbed 10 rebounds; senior forward Camey Geiman had six assists; and the defense forced 19 turnovers and held Campbell County to 32.8 percent shooting.

But there was also much to frustrate Kues: The 19 turnovers; 41.3 percent shooting from the field; 8-for-18 from the free throw line.

At least Campbell County could say it led Brossart for 21/2 minutes. It was a lot better than the 88-40 wipeout the Camels suffered against Brossart on Feb. 13, when Campbell County missed 18 shots in the first quarter and trailed 27-0.

Two weeks ago, Campbell County (12-15) tried to run with Brossart. Thursday, Cravens switched to a halfcourt game, and it worked early.

Junior forward Dawn Sparks, who led Campbell County with 24 points, hit a pair of field goals that gave the Camels a 4-0 lead a minute into the game, but a field goal and foul shot by senior forward Camey Geiman and Schwegmann's field goal put Brossart ahead 5-4 with 5:31 left in the first quarter.

Brossart (27-1) finished the quarter with a 12-6 run and a 17-10 lead after one quarter, and the Lady 'Stangs extended it to 35-16 at halftime.

Schwegmann, who finished the half with 15 points, scored nine points in 16-4 run that gave Brossart a 35-16 halftime advantage.

Sophomore forward Leah Ballinger had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Campbell County.

        CAMPBELL COUNTY (50): Wilson 1 0 2, Hardy 2 0 4, Ballinger 4 2 10, Ragan 2 0 4, Franzen 2 2 6, Sparks 11 2 24. Totals: 22 6 50.
