N.KY. GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP


Ladybirds beat Newport CC

        Highlands, the top-ranked Ninth Region girls team, raced to a 32-15 halftime lead and cruised past host Newport Central Catholic 55-36 Thursday in the 36th District.

        Highlands freshman forward Tara Boothe scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the first half. Senior guard Stephanie Sandfoss added 18 points.

        NewCath was led by sophomore guard Maria Chiodi's 11 points.

        The Ladybirds (21-4), who have clinched a Ninth Region Tournament berth, will meet Bellevue in the district final at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at NewCath.

        Jessica Schmidt paced Walton-Verona with 13 points.

        • Holy Cross 58, Ludlow 36, 35th District at Holmes — Natalie Gardner and Kellie Ferguson combined for 13 points in the first quarter, triggering a 21-4 run by the Indians.

        Gardner finished with 19 points with Ferguson scoring 11. Kelly Collins led Ludlow with 18.

        Holy Cross plays Holmes 6:30 p.m. today for the championship.

        Notre Dame was 5-of-29 from the field in the second half.

        Erica Hallman led Holmes with 23 points. Mindy Bishop added 14. Notre Dame was led by Emalee Listerman with 11.

        Grant County advances to the championship game 7 p.m. Saturday.

        • Boone County 52, St. Henry 39, 33rd District at Conner — Sophomore Ciara Henderson scored nine points in the firtst quarter when the Rebels took a 13-3 lead.

        Katie Schliesman led Boone County with 21 points. Henderson finished with 18.

        Boone County will face Conner in the district championship game 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Conner.
