DISTRICT WRESTLING

Elder's Christopfel wins in wild finish

BY MARK SCHMETZER
Enquirer contributor

Elder junior heavyweight Andy Christopfel would have preferred his first career victory over Fairfield's Jeff Ramsey be on the mat, but he'll take what came his way Saturday night.

Christopfel gained a 3-2 decision in the championship match of the Division I district wrestling tournament at Fairfield High School. He and Ramsey finished regulation time amid controversy that stemmed from Christopfel's near-takedown as time expired.

Referee Brian Decker awarded Christopfel two points, then reversed the decision after conferring with assistant referee Jack Beard. By then, though, Ramsey had thrown his headgear in protest, and Christopfel was awarded a penalty point that led to his victory.

“I've been wrestling him since the fourth grade, and this is the first time I've ever beaten him,” said Christopfel (30-5), who qualified for next week's state tournament for the first time in his career. “Tonight, I wrestled my butt off. It would've been better if it was settled on the mat, but I'll have another chance at the state meet.”

“(Ramsey) shouldn't throw his headgear, no matter what,” Fairfield assistant coach Randy Hambrick said. “He's known that since the seventh grade.”

Christopfel's title was one of seven won by area wrestlers in the district tournament. Huber Heights Wayne, the state's No.2 team according to the coaches association poll, won the team title. Fairfield finished second with Sycamore third.

Greater Catholic League schools produced five of the seven area district champions: Elder's Christopfel and Nick Spatola (119 pounds), Moeller's Joe Zinkan (130) and Bobby Lyons (140) and St. Xavier's Vince Carraher (160).

Lakota West's Matt McIntire (125) and Harrison's Brady Morris (215) were the other two local champions.

Lyons's 10-8 win over Sycamore's Omar Scruggs, the defending district champion, was one of the more intense matches of the evening.

“We pretty much respect each other as competitors on the mats, but we're not exactly buddy-buddy off the mats,” said Lyons, a junior. “I lost to him in the Coaches Classic, so this was sweet redemption. In that match, I was a little bit intimidated, but I knew that I was the better wrestler and that I could control the match. I knew if I did that, I would break him down mentally.”

The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the state tournament, which starts Thursday at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

Thirty-five wrestlers from area schools, two more than last year, qualified in Division I, led by five each from Fairfield and Sycamore.

“I think our area had a real good showing,” Sycamore coach Gary Listermann said. “I see a lot more state placers coming out of this district than in previous years.”
