State scouts bicentennial barns

The Ohio Bicentennial Commission is looking for a few good barns.

The commission hopes to paint the bicentennial logo on at least one barn in each of Ohio's 88 counties in time for the celebration in 2003.

So far, the commission has received 17 requests from barn owners in Butler, Clermont, Hamilton, Warren, Clinton and Highland counties, said Brian Newbacher, spokesman for the commission in Columbus.

“We'll look at a description of each to determine if they're in good condition and in high visibility ar eas,” he said. “If they're not, we'll go with the next best thing.”

Scott Hagan, 22, of Belmont County will paint the barns. He learned his trade with retired Mail Pouch barn painter Harley Warrick.

“They live 20 minutes from each other,” Mr. Newbacher said. “Harley ended up giving Scott tips and his old planks.”

Each barn takes 12-14 hours to paint.

“But with one guy doing the painting, the job will take a while,” he said. —Randy McNutt
