Loveland ministry still funneling aid to Mitch victims

BY JULIE IRWIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

A representative of Matthew 25: Ministries, a Lovelandrelief organization, met Monday with President Clinton in Nicaragua as the group's aid to Central America shoulders on.

Matthew 25: Ministries has sent 10 U.S. cargo planes — about 1.5 million pounds of aid — to Nicaragua since Hurricane Mitch battered Central America in the fall. It's also shipped another 320,000 pounds of food to Honduras, said the group's founder, the Rev. Wendell Mettey.

Life in Nicaragua is no longer as perilous as it was in the weeks following the storm, the Rev. Mr. Mettey said, but hun ger and devastation persist.

“We're now getting past just keeping people alive. Our emphasis now is on rebuilding,” the Rev. Mr. Mettey said.

Although individual donations have tapered off, the ministry continues to receive excess inventory from corporations that it's been able to send to Central America.

On Monday, as its Nicaragua representative was meeting with Mr. Clinton, Matthew 25: Ministries shipped 80 tons of food to Honduras with the help of Chiquita Brands International.
