Barbie milestones




        • 1959 - March 9: Barbie The Teen Age Fashion Model doll debuts at Toy Fair in New York.

        • 1961 - Barbie gets a boyfriend named Ken. She also becomes a ballerina, flight attendant and registered nurse.

        • 1962 - Barbie gets her first dream house, which was of corrugated cardboard and car, a coral Austin-Healy.

        • 1963 — Midge, her best friend, is introduced.

        • 1964 — Skipper, Barbie's younger sister, is introduced.

        • 1965 - Barbie is an astronaut.

        • 1967 - Barbie loosens up. “Twist N Turn Barbie” can swivel her hips. Fashion model Twiggy becomes the first celebrity to join the Barbie doll family.

        • 1968 - Barbie breaks her silence and speaks: “I have a date tonight” and “Would you like to go shopping?” Barbie gets her first African-American friend, Christie.

        • 1985 - Oscar de la Renta is the first fashion designer to create and lend his signature to Barbie duds.

        • 1988 - Barbie gets her first Hispanic friend, Teresa. The first Barbie in the (Christmas) Holiday Series is introduced.

        • 1990 - Barbie gets her first Asian friend, Kira.

        • 1992 - “Totally Hair Barbie” (with hair reaching her toes) is introduced and becomes the best-selling Barbie of all time.

        • 1997 - Barbie goes high tech. “Talk With Me Barbie” gabs up a storm with the help of a CD-ROM and computer.

        • 1999 - Barbie turns 40.
