Readers share Barbie memories
Barbie inspires dreams and fond memories. Here's a sampling of the stories ourreaders wanted to share:
Last fall while playing soccer, I fractured my wrist. After a long day at the hospital to get X-rays and a purple cast, I was feeling pretty bad. On the way home my mommy stopped at the store and told me to pick out any Barbie I wanted. Getting a new Barbie made my day much better. Lindy Hamberg, 9, Alexandria
When I was in high school I would tell my date that I had an early curfew so I could go home to play Barbies with my nieces. Bonita Fitzpatrick, 49, Moores Head, Ind.
"For years, as I raised my own daughter and spent fortunes on the evolution of Barbie and Ken, I complained that I had never had a similar experience because I was a young teen when Barbie was "born.' Apparently I was persuasive enough to convince my mother because on Christmas Eve 1993 I received my very first and only Barbie doll. That spring I lost my mother, but not before we laughed a lot about my treasured doll. I am reminded in a very real way that a mother's love is constant and the manifestation of that love can come in very simple and unexpected ways, no matter how old that child has grown. Juvenile Court Judge Sylvia Sieve Hendon, 54, Western Hills
My two sisters and I loved to act out plays and would check out scripts for them from the local library. The Barbie Theater and all the costumes for Barbie and Ken were a big hit. Cynthia Fitton, 42, Hyde Park
During the '60s, my girlfriend next door and I would get together with our Barbie and Ken dolls and pretend they were either the Beatles and their wives or the stars in West Side Story. Vicki Westrich, 46, Dry Ridge
My sister and I have 78 Barbie dolls, but we wouldn't call it a collection. Our Barbies weren't meant to sit on a shelf or stay in their original boxes. We play with our Barbies . . . It's the one time during the day that we agree on almost everything. Caroline and Betsy Strait, ages 14 and 7, Middletown
