Brossart falls to state's No. 1

BY RAY SCHAEFER
Enquirer contributor

PARIS, Ky. — Bishop Brossart girls basketball coach Ray Kues didn't say Tuesday his Lady 'Stangs were a good team. He called them a great team.

Brossart's season ended in the 10th Region finals with a 61-48 loss to the state's No.1-ranked team, Montgomery County, at Bourbon County High School behind senior guard Harmonie King's 21 points.

Kues and his players treasured more pleasant memories: A school-record 30-2 season; a 24-game winning streak; the state All “A” small-school championship in January.

“We're not ashamed at all of the outcome of (Tuesday's) game,” Kues said. “How can you be when you lose to the No.1 team in the state?”

The Lady 'Stangs, No. 1 in the Enquirer poll and fourth in the state, made it close.

After trailing 42-31 after three quarters, Brossart (30-2) went on an 11-2 run over the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to pull to within 44-42. Senior forward Camey Geiman and senior forward Cara Kopp scored four points each.

Montgomery County junior forward Danika Cox scored to make it 46-42, and Schwegmann's 10-footer made it 46-44 with 3:57 remaining.

That was as close as Brossart came. King — the tournament's most valuable player — Cox and senior guard Amber Roby led a 6-0 run to put the Lady Indians (31-2) ahead to stay at 52-44 with 2:34 to go.

“They scored when they needed to,” Geiman said.

Brossart finished with 20-of-54 shooting from the field compared to Montgomery County's 22-of-42.

        MONTGOMERY COUNTY (61) — A. Gessford 1-0 2, Roby 3-3 10, King 6-9 21, Lee 5-0 10, Cox 7-4 18. Totals: 22-16 61.

        BISHOP BROSSART (48) — Geiman 5-3 14, Kopp 5-0 10, Wright 1-2 4, Henke 1-0 2, Schwegmann 8-1 18. Totals: 20-6 48.

        Montgomery County ....... 13  15  14  19—61

        Bishop Brossart ....... 11   8  12  17—48

        Three-point goals: MC-Roby. BB-Geiman, Schwegmann. Records: MC 31-2, BB 30-2.

All-tournament team: Leslie Hamilton (Bracken County); Anya Hawkins, (Bourbon County); Allison Poe (Maysville St. Patrick); Tammy Arnett (Winchester George Rogers Clark); Sumika Alexander, Courtney Alexander (Mason County); Christine Garnett, Camryn Whitaker (Harrison County); Katie Schwegmann, Camey Geiman, Katie Wright (Bishop Brossart); Amy Gessford, Whitney Lee, Danika Cox (Montgomery County).

Most valuable player: Harmonie King, Montgomery County.
