Madeira runs past East Clinton

BY CAREY HOFFMAN

DAYTON — Madeira's Ken Fields summed up his team's victory Wednesday: “If we can hang with them during their spurts, most people can't hang with us when we have our spurts.”

Fields scored all 15 of his points in the final 9:30, including the game's most pivotal play, to set up Madeira's 73-54 victory over East Clinton in a Division III district championship game at UD Arena.

Madeira (22-1), the third- ranked team in Ohio Division III, meets the winner of Friday's Bloom-Carroll vs. Columbus Hartley game in the regional semifinals. This matches Madeira's deepest-ever tournament run.

Madeira, with a style best described as choreographed freneticism, had a 12-4 run in the final 2:50 of the second quarter to take a nine-point halftime lead, then a 7-0 run in the first 1:40 of the third quarter to build the lead to 16, 42-26.

The lead was still 14 at quarter's end, before East Clinton countered with its only run of the night. The Astros cut the lead to just six, 55-49, with 4:58 to play on guard Eric Slagle's three-pointer.

East Clinton's Travis Mellinger then stole the ball on Madeira's next possession. But Fields ripped the ball away, scored a layup and was fouled. He hit the foul shot to push the lead back to nine. Five seconds later, Madeira's Tim Dooley stole the ball at midcourt and fed it to Todd Schlensker for a fast-break layup.

“They were getting pretty close, so I thought Fields' lay was huge,” Madeira coach Jim Reynolds said. “But its come in spurts for us all year, so it was no surprise.”

        MADEIRA (73) — Fields 5 4 15, Dinsmore 6 3 15, Parkhouse 1 1 3, Schlensker 9 4 22, Cohen 1 0 3, Dooley 1 0 2, Newberry 1 4 7, Underwood 3 0 6. Totals: 27-55 16-23 73.

        EAST CLINTON (54) — Boggs 1 0 2, Chance 4 3 11, Miller 4 2 10, Slagle 5 2 14, Barnes 0 3 3, Mellinger 2 0 4, Reynolds 4 2 10. Totals: 20-48 12-13 54.

        Madeira ....... 12  23  16  22—73

        East Clinton ....... 12  14  11  17—54

        Three-point goals: M - Fields, Cohen, Newberry; EC - Slagle 2. Records: M 22-1, EC 17-6.
