Want a piece of Weeb? Items to be auctioned

Weeb Ewbank told his underdog Jets before the biggest upset in Super Bowl history that after his team won, he would take “a boatswain's swing,” instead of being carried off the field.

The line can be found in the notes of Ewbank's Super Bowl III playbook, which along with 60 other lots of the late coach's memorabilia is to be auctioned April 29 and 30 by Chicago-based Mastro Fine Sports Auctions.

Ewbank, the Miami University graduate who is the only coach to win an NFL and AFL championship, died in Oxford last year. He left meticulous archives, including his Jets playbook from six seasons and the Colts playbook from seven seasons, which are to get minimum bids of $1,500.

A 1959 Colts' collection that includes a championship watch, a Colts championship ash tray and mugs, a four-inch piece of the goal post from the legendary 1958 NFL title game against the Giants has a minimum bid of $900.

The Super Bowl III playbook may be the most fascinating item, fetching a minimum bid of $2,000. It includes the speech notes, a clipping from a Detroit column predicting a 27-0 Jets' loss, diagrams of plays and a play-by-play description. — Geoff Hobson
