Teen wrestling matches canceled in California
BY CINDY KRANZ
The Cincinnati Enquirer
In response to public criticism, bloody, backyard wrestling matches in Ventura County, Calif. have been canceled, at least temporarily, according to a March 3 report in the Ventura County Star.
The amateur matches were organized by a 17-year-old high school student who called his organization the Real Wrestling Federation.
The free fights were being held in backyards and public parks and featured beatings with barbed-wire, boards and fluorescent light tubes. Contestants were other teens.
The matches were called off by organizer Andre Verdun until all this blows over.
The newspaper dubbed the matches part of a national trend of mimicking the violent tendencies of professional wrestlers on television programs.
