Vehicle hits child on Hamilton street

A 9-year-old boy was critically injured Friday night after he ran into a Hamilton street and was struck by a vehicle.

Antwon Ware was in critical condition at Children's Hospital Medical Center late Friday. He originally was taken to Mercy Hospital Fairfield and was taken to Children's in Cincinnati by helicopter.

According to Hamilton police, Antwon ran from the south side of the 500 block of Ludlow Street into the path of a westbound vehicle. Rescue workers were called about 6:20 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation, police said. No other information was available.

Truck spills corn, closing I-71 south
NORWOOD — There was more than traffic rolling on Interstate 71 Friday.

A truck wreck sent an 80,000-pound load of corn rolling across the southbound lanes and forced their closure during much of the morning rush hour.

There were no reports of injuries from the 4:35 a.m. accident. The highway was partly reopened after about 21/2 hours, and full use was restored later in the day.

The southbound traffic was detoured onto Ohio 562 (the Norwood Lateral), which connects I-71 with Interstate 75. That caused a backup on I-75 southbound into downtown.

Police said the truck overturned as the driver was steering from Ohio 562 onto southbound I-71 and the load of corn shifted in the trailer.

        • West Fork Branch Library, 3825 West Fork Road, Monfort Heights, 7 p.m. March 22 (369-4472).

        • Main Library, 800 Vine St., Huenefeld Tower Room, 2 p.m. April 10 (369-6970).

The program is designed to show how to use library resources to find financial aid.

Three convicted in Mafia probe
CLEVELAND — Three men were convicted Friday of being members of the Mafia — arranging the murder of a rival gang member and the shooting of a county prosecutor as part of their underworld jobs.

Bernard Altshuler, 68, Lavance Turnage, 26, and Jeffrey Riddle, 38, were the latest to be convicted in a five-year probe that has also brought a deal with mob leader Lenine Strollo and indictments and guilty pleas from public officials.

Federal prosecutors say the investigation could bring charges against other public officials from Youngstown, a city long associated with mob activity.

About 50 people have been indicted since Mr. Strollo and dozens of associates were first charged in December 1997.

Rock and Roll Hall plans expansion
CLEVELAND — The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is planning a multimillion-dollar expansion that will house an archive and a restaurant.

The museum will begin fund raising later this year, said spokesman Tim Moore, who did not know how much the expansion will cost.

The expansion will be on the rock hall's west side facing the adjacent Great Lakes Science Center.

The $92 million, 150,000-square-foot museum opened in 1995.

Mom would ride chair in street again
SANDUSKY, Ohio — Kelly Dillery didn't hesitate when asked if she will ride her wheelchair in the street again with daughter Kelsi strapped to her lap.

“If I have to go in the streets, I'll go in the streets,” she said Thursday moments after a jury cleared her of a child endangering charge.

The 30-year-old mother with muscular dystrophy has become a hero to some and a nuisance to others for her insistence that she be allowed to ride in streets when she can't get onto sidewalks. Motorists and police in this Lake Erie shoreline city between Toledo and Cleveland say she is putting herself and 5-year-old Kelsi in danger.

She earlier was convicted of using her wheelchair in a street on a separate occasion.

City Prosecutor Rob DeLamatre said he could not rule out the possibility of future charges.

Parents sue county after boy left on bus CANTON — The parents of a developmentally disabled 3-year-old boy left alone on a school bus for three hours are suing Stark County for more than $2 million.
Douglas and Tami Reynolds of Canton brought the lawsuit Thursday against the county's Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (MRDD).

The couple's son, Ryan, was strapped in his car seat when he should have been taken into Eastgate School in Louisville for morning classes.

He was discovered at the MRDD's bus garage in Canton Township several miles from the school.

MRDD Superintendent Thomas A. Seeson declined to comment Friday.
