Lockland paper factory fire was arson, investigators say

BY MARIE McCAIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

LOCKLAND — A blaze that gutted a 79-year-old portion of the old paper factory owned by American Tissue Mills of Ohio Inc. was arson, village officials said Monday.

Arson investigators suspect the March 7 fire originated in a central area of the one-story structure, a block from Lock Street and South Cooper Avenue. Though much of the factory is vacant, that part of the building housed security and maintenance offices.

It is not known exactly when the fire started, but officials think it smoldered overnight before firefighters were called about 9:30 a.m.

The blaze drew firefighters from seven suburban departments. They were hindered by thick smoke, intense flames and a roof cave-in before they were able to control the blaze.

Lockland Fire Capt. Bill Welshans said anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 352-3040 or the Lockland Police Department at 761-1699.
