Silverton swimming pool to open, council decides

BY ALLEN HOWARD
The Cincinnati Enquirer

SILVERTON — Council voted Thursday night to open the city's swimming pool for eight weeks this summer, June 21-Aug. 15.

A survey of Silverton residents showed a majority of those returning questionnaires, distributed last weekend, favored opening the pool.

Councilman Nasse Chachoff, chairman of parks and recreation, made the motion and Councilwoman Carrie McLemore-Walker seconded it.

The motion calls for Silverton to contract with the Blue Ash YMCA to manage the pool, sell pool passes and memberships, and be responsible for repairs to bring the pool up to standards.

Paul Steman, service manager, said repairs include scraping and painting a 400-square-foot area in the pool and painting and refinishing a concrete area around the pool.

The pool will be able to open without any expense to the city, said Mrs. McLemore-Walker, thanks to donations, including a $40,000 gift from Carl Lindner, and others from residents and organizations.

In a report given by Gerri Whitehead and Idella Thompson, members of a pool committee, 40 people promised donations to the committee.

“There were only 29 residents of the 210 questionnaires returned who were against opening the pool,” Mrs. Thompson said.
