Downtown parking rates going up; no end in sight

BY AMY HIGGINS
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Downtown commuters, reach for your pocketbook — or your bus pass. Rates at many downtown parking garages and lots are on the rise again.

Monthly rates at two city lots are expected to go up as much as $10 this spring. Other private lots already have increased monthly fees $10 or more as riverfront development erases hundreds of parking spaces and economic development fills downtown jobs.

“We've leased a helluva lot of office space downtown,” said John Schneider, chairman of Downtown Cincinnati Inc.'s transportation committee.

Parking hasn't kept up. It's about supply and demand, with demand — and parking lot operators — winning.

Consider: There are 80,000 workers downtown and 31,000 parking spaces. About 30,000 take public transportation. Add another 10,000 parking spaces around the periphery. That's still 9,000 people — not counting visitors — carpooling or left circling the block.
