Police report new evidence in '97 death of UC student
The Cincinnati Enquirer
ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio Authorities have interviewed a convicted drug dealer after obtaining what they say is evidence that a second person was at the scene where a medical student was found dead.
Belmont County sheriff's investigators are still trying to determine whether the death of Anthony Proviano, 29, in December 1997 was a homicide or suicide.
His family rejected an initial conclusion that Proviano killed himself and hired a coroner who said he could not rule out the possibility it was a homicide.
The University of Cincinnati medical student, from the Pittsburgh suburb of Baldwin, Pa., did not arrive home as expected for Christmas that year. He was found dead Dec. 28, shot in the chest with his own gun behind a hotel in this eastern Ohio city along Interstate 70. He had checked in five days earlier while traveling from Cincinnati.
Olen Martin, Belmont County's chief deputy sheriff, would not say what new evidence was obtained from the woods where Mr. Proviano was found, from his car and from a hotel room where he stayed in St. Clairsville.
There is some forensic evidence we've collected from the scenes that may indicate the presence of another person, Mr. Martin said.
He said his investigators visited the Greene County, Pa., jail during the past week to interview Douglas Ray Main, 37, of Washington, Pa. Mr. Main was arrested last May and is serving nine to 18 months for drug trafficking.
