CYCLONES 3, FORT WAYNE 2

Happy homecoming for Knipscheer

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Cincinnati Cyclones received a strong offensive effort from center Fred Knipscheer and a spectacular defensive show from goaltender Frederic Cassivi in a 3-2 shootout victory over the Fort Wayne Komets Saturday.

The win was Cincinnati's first in Fort Wayne since Oct. 31, 1997. Knipscheer, a Fort Wayne native, scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season, one in each of the first two periods, in helping the 'Clones open a 2-0 lead midway through the second.

He later added the game-winning goal in the fifth round of the shootout.

In that extra session, Fort Wayne's Andre Roy scored in the second round, while the Cyclones received scores on their final two shots from left wing Jeff Shevalier and Knipscheer.

“We knew we were going to have our hands full with Fort Wayne these two games,” Cyclones coach/GM Ron Smith said. “They're still full because we have a couple of games with Cleveland in the next three days.”

The Cyclones defense, which was 24-0-2 when leading after two periods this season, added another victory as Cassivi stopped eight shots in the third period and 28 for the game in picking up his club-leading 15th win.

Cincinnati is tied again with Orlando for second place in the IHL's Northeast Division and Eastern Conference. Orlando lost its game against Long Beach 3-2.
