In an effort to make a push for the IHL Turner Cup, the Cincinnati Cyclones obtained former Vezina Trophy winner Jim Carey on loan from the NHL St. Louis Blues.
Carey, known as the Net Detective, won the NHL's Vezina Trophy given to the top goaltender for the 1995-96 season while with Washington. He had nine shutouts and a 2.26 goals against average that season. But Carey's NHL career has floundered since that year. Carey was traded to hometown Boston during the 1996-97 season, but eventually lost the starting goalie job to Byron Dafoe and was sent to the minors.
He spent this season with Providence (AHL), compiling a 17-8-3 record, 2.34 goals against average and .919 save percentage. Carey was making over $2 million this season, so Boston waived him. St. Louis subse quently signed the goalie.
Carey was 1-2-0 with a 3.84 goals against average and .829 save percentage in four games with St. Louis. We want to do whatever we can to give us a chance to make an extended run in the playoffs, Cyclones General Manager Ron Smith said.
Cyclones goalie Jani Hurme is nursing a sore back that will keep him out at least another 10 days. Frederic Cassivi has been inconsistent. Both are property of Ottawa.
