INDUSTRY NOTES: MANUFACTURING

Mobil picks Mosler for security TV

BY MIKE BOYER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Mosler Inc. of Hamilton has been named the preferred provider of closed-circuit TV security systems for Mobil Corp.'s On the Run convenience store chain.

The designation could be worth more than $1 million to Mosler for providing hardware, installation and service to Mobil's more than 10,000 convenience and gasoline outlets, Mosler spokesman John Pearce said.

In addition to the potential size of the contract, Mr. Pearce said, the designation also reflects the company's efforts to expand its marketing beyond its traditional branch banking and retail accounts.

The system that Mosler will provide includes Sanyo closed-circuit TV cameras and video links from Transaction Verification Systems Inc. to track not only customers coming and going but also monitor store employees as they handle cash.

A feature linking the system with the cash registers allows managers to quickly review certain types of transactions, such as “no sale” transactions, without spending hours watching entire videotapes.

“We chose Mosler to provide the system because in addition to the products they install, they also bring us their ability to provide worldwide service and support,” said Bernie Aumann, Mobil's security adviser.

Keco wins more work on Air Force units
Keco Industries Inc., the Florence unit of Engineered Support Systems Inc., has received contract options valued at $22.9 million to provide the Air Force with portable heating and cooling pumps used in tents and mobile vans.

The additional contract for the Field Deployable Environmental Control Units is a follow-up to the initial $18.9 million contract for more than 1,700 units received last year. Keco has said the contract could potentially be worth more than $150 million over five years.

The Keco contract option was part of $51.5 million in new defense contracts and options received by St. Louis-based Engineered Support Systems.

Lucent will help Bell to upgrade services
Lucent Technologies has agreed to provide intelligent network hardware and software to Cincinnati Bell to upgrade a variety of customer services.

Terms of the three-year agreement weren't disclosed, but Lucent said the network equipment that it will provide will allow Cincinnati Bell to offer customers custom announcements, the ability to set different telephone answering messages at different times of the day, and new call-screening services, voice dialing and call waiting.

Newport printing firm finishes expansion
Multi-Craft Litho Inc., a Newport commercial printing firm, has completed a more than $1 million expansion that doubled the size of its plant at 131 E. Sixth St.

The addition, which increased the plant to 28,000 square feet, houses a new electronic prepress and bindery operation. As part of the addition, the company has also acquired a six-color Komori press with a coating tower.

Deborah Pfaffl, president, said the addition expands the company's capabilities. Multi-Craft has expanded to 55 employees and expects to add five more, she said.
