Airline exchanges trips for food donations

BY LISA DONOVAN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

There's something about the promise of a good deal that will propel even the biggest morning mope out of bed by dawn.

Just ask Tracy Walker, 30, Madisonville. She normally doesn't like to see that time of day, but after hearing about Vanguard Airlines' ticket giveaway Thursday, she was up before the sun had a chance to rise and shine.

“Actually, I haven't been to bed yet,” she said, standing in the parking lot of the Showcase Cinemas in Bond Hill where Vanguard sponsored the giveaway. Ms. Walker, who will use her ticket to travel to Chicago, was worried she wouldn't be able to get up in time Thursday to take advantage of the Vanguard promotion, so she decided to just stay op all night.

She was among 1,600 Tristate travelers who zoomed in and out of the theater lot between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. Thursday, answering Vanguard's call to bring in a case of food — 24 cans — in exchange for a round-trip ticket from Cincinnati to Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City or Pittsburgh. The line began forming about 3 a.m., organizers said.

Thursday's promotion netted 35,000 pounds of canned goods for the FreeStore/Foodbank of Greater Cincinnati.

“It's nice because I give to the FreeStore regularly,” Bond Hill resident Patricia Matillar said after delivering a suitcase full of canned goods and picking up the ticket for either Chicago or Mineapolis.

The discount airline, based in Kansas City, Mo., is scheduled to restart service at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport on April 15. Its lowest fare is $38 round trip to Chicago.
