Chabot leads drive to put TV cameras in federal courts

WASHINGTON — A bipartisan group of lawmakers led by Rep. Steve Chabot undertook another effort Thursday to open federal courts to television.
Mr. Chabot, R-Cincinnati, and Rep. William Delahunt, D-Mass., reintroduced the Sunshine in the Courtroom Act that would give federal judges from the Supreme Court to the district level the discretion to permit televised proceedings.
Companion legislation was introduced in the Senate by Republican Charles Grassley of Iowa and Democrat Charles Schumer of New York.
“This is not a radical concept,” Mr. Chabot said at a Capitol Hill news conference with the other three congressmen.
“Virtually every state has chosen to allow television access to court proceedings, and 43 allow television at the trial court level.”
Messrs. Chabot and Schumer led a similar proposal to passage in the House last year, when Mr. Schumer was a member of that body.
But the Senate failed to consider the bill in the press before the November elections.
