Scramble for vets home
Franklin among 10 communities lobbying

COLUMBUS Although no decision on a site for a veterans home in southern Ohio was made Thursday, 10 communities including Franklin in Warren County jockeyed for position during final, 10-minute presentations before the Ohio Veterans Network Committee.
The committee's final recommendation on a proposed southern Ohio veterans home is expected in the next month.
Franklin officials planned to tout their Interstate 75 location between Cincinnati and Dayton, and that more than 270,000 veterans live within a 50-mile radius of the city.
Construction would start in 2000, and the home should open in 2001. It could employ between 100 and 125.
Committee members emphasized that the site selected for the home is not assured of getting the $12 million to $18 million in state and federal funding needed for a 168-bed home.
It is not a done deal that there will be a veterans home in southern Ohio, said committee member David Aldstadt. School funding, a downturn in the economy or a change in government regulations could stop this project at any time.
Delaying final site selection planned for Thursday were stacks of information committee members need to plow through, he added.
The Ohio Veterans Network Committee, which includes four state lawmakers, has already decided there is a need for a new veterans home in southern Ohio.
Other cities in the running: Georgetown, Cambridge, Chillicothe, Marietta, Gallipolis, Belpre, South Point, Pomeroy and McConnelsville.
