'Eden' offers alternative nursing home
BY SUE MacDONALD
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Imagine a nursing home that's lush with green plants, filled with chirping birds and accented by the voices of children interacting with older residents.
That's the philosophy behind The Eden Alternative, a program initiated in 1991 at a New York nursing home to combat loneliness, boredom and helplessness among seniors.
I can sometimes trick the body into recovery by administering drugs and treatments, says Dr. William Thomas, founder and president of the Eden Alternative. The spirit, however, cannot be deceived. The Eden Alternative deals directly with the human spirit.
Dr. Thomas will speak to seniors, caregivers and family members at a free seminar 1-3:30 p.m. Wednesdayat Maple Knoll Center for Older Adults, 11199 Springfield Pike, Springdale. A separate morning session for health-care and nursing home professionals will be at Llanfair Retirement Community in College Hill.
The Eden Alternative, used at 150 U.S. nursing homes, encourages social interaction, biological diversity and spontaneity by encouraging pet ownership, plants, on-site child care and day camps, after-school activities, family involvement and the sheer enjoyment of life. Its implementation tends to decrease staff turnover and the use of medicines and to improve residents' longevity.
To register for Dr. Thomas' talk, call 771-2005. His visit is sponsored by Momentum Health Solutions and PacifiCare Health Systems.
