Avondale man indicted in woman's death
An Avondale man has been indicted on charges of killing Laquitta Elliott and then fleeing to Georgia in her car.
Raymond Akins, 25, is charged with murder, robbery and theft. Prosecutors say he strangled Ms. Elliott, 24, before stealing her purse, cellular phone and Pontiac Grand Am.
Ms. Elliott, who was last seen alive in early October, was found dead in her Bond Hill apartment on Oct. 23.
Prosecutors say Mr. Akins was arrested three weeks later in Dekalb County, Ga., after police spotted him driving Ms. Elliott's car.
They say Mr. Akins is being held in Georgia on unrelated charges and will be transported to Cincinnati when extradition proceedings are complete. He was indicted Tuesday.
Store chain helps open library at Children's
Children's Hospital Medical Center on Wednesday dedicated a patient library of more than 15,000 books donated by Half Price Books.
The Half Pint Library in Cincinnati is the largest of 17 similar libraries in eight states to be supported by more than 50,000 donated books collected by the bookstore chain. Children's hospitals in Dayton, Columbus and Cleveland also are receiving Half Pint Libraries.
The books were donated by Greater Cincinnati customers during a three-month book drive at the two local Half Price Books stores.
Springfield Twp. restaurant robbed
SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP Two men, one armed with a rifle, robbed the Buffalo Wings & Rings restaurant on Compton Road just west of Winton Road shortly after it closed at 11 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
The robbers, both wearing ski masks, ordered several employees onto the floor and took an undetermined amount of money from the register. One employee was struck in the leg by a brick thrown by one of the robbers, and another was kicked as she lay on the floor. Neither was seriously hurt, and they did not require medical atten tion, police said.
A shot was fired in the restaurant parking lot as the two men fled. They were last seen running south from the eatery.
Blood donors needed over holiday weekend
Facing a holiday weekend and high demand from local patients, Hoxworth Blood Center issued a call this week for more blood donors, especially for type O blood.
Patients with internal bleeding problems this month have reduced supplies. The situation isn't a crisis yet, but Hoxworth knows that donations tend to slip on holiday weekends, said Hoxworth spokeswoman Marsha Terry.
For information about how to give blood, call 451-0910 or (800) 830-1091.
Judge won't have to pay for prisoner's baby
CLEVELAND A judge accused of sentencing a pregnant woman to prison to prevent her abortion won't have to pay damages, according to a new ruling.
The decision dismisses part of Yuriko Kawaguchi's civil lawsuit, which accused Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Patricia Cleary of violating her civil rights.
The lawsuit did not ask for a specific monetary amount, but her attorney said in November that raising the child would cost about $750,000.
Linda Rocker, Ms. Kawaguchi's attorney and a former judge, said she would appeal.
