CINCINNATI HIGH SCHOOL REPORT
New sport Taylor-made for Alyward
After running for the Taylor track team the past three seasons, senior Steve Alyward was ready for a new challenge.
That turned out to be tennis, which Alyward had never played before Thursday's non-league match against Ross.
I've had a racket in my hand before I tried out for the team, Alyward said. But I never played a competitive match until today.
Using the family racket, Alyward teamed with Jacob Sturgill to win a 3-2 doubles match over Ross.
I also decided to run track, Alyward said. I talked with (track) coach (Gary) Baitz and he's allowing me to do both.
Tennis coach Drew Dilley was happy with Alyward's first match.
Steve's decent but he has a long way to go, Dilley said. He was pretty excited about winning the first match and told me I'd better phone it in because he wanted to see his name in The Enquirer.
The outcome may have been different if Sturgill, a fourth-year starter, had played singles.
Ross didn't have a No.3 singles player and that's why Jacob and I played together, said Alyward, who also was weakened from donating blood at school earlier in the day. We played off for the No. 3 singles spot last week and he beat me 6-3.
Baseball
North College Hill 3, St. Bernard 2 Adam Hoeffer has struggled making contact with the ball during the first three games for North College Hill.
But Hoeffer made contact when it counted Thursday against St. Bernard, hitting a line drive single that scored Aaron Ruther with the winning run in the eighth.
Relief pitcher Bryan Hartwig worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and picked up the victory. NCH is now 3-1.
Cincinnati Country Day 7, Madeira 5 Country Day coach Tim Dunn's call for a suicide squeeze in the fifth inning, with his team tied 4-4 with Madeira, paid off.
Senior Jeff Mayne laid down a perfect bunt that drove in what proved to be the winning run in a battle of unbeatens at CCD.
Turpin 14, Bethel-Tate 8 First-year Turpin coach Rob Lubanskihit can thank Josh Nesbitt for his first career varsity victory.
Batting twice in the 10-run third inning, Nesbitt led off with a solo homer and later capped the inning with a grand slam. He ended the game with six RBI.
