Ohio turns over probe to FBI
The Associated Press
AKRON Attorney General Betty Montgomery has turned over to the FBI her investigation of a government agency that provides water to two northeast Ohio cities.
The FBI asked us to have them take the lead, Montgomery spokesman Chris Davey told the Akron Beacon Journal.
He would not say when or why Ms. Montgomery's office withdrew from the criminal part of the investigation into the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District.
State Auditor Jim Petro released a special audit in August 1997 that found nearly $2.7 million in public money was illegally or improperly spent by the agency. It supplies water to Youngstown and Niles.
FBI spokesman Robert Hawk would not comment on the investigation or why Ms. Montgomery's office was asked to withdraw from it.
We're interested in anything on public corruption, Mr. Hawk said.
Ms. Montgomery filed three lawsuits in August in three counties that seek to recover $2.5 million from the district's two former board members, Edward Flask of Youngstown and Frank DeJute of Nile, and Gilbane Building Co. of Providence, R.I.
The men are accused of getting unauthorized benefits and approving improper construction contracts. Gilbane has been sued to recover money from construction management work allegedly never done or not documented.
The company and both men deny wrongdoing.
