CCM to raise curtain on new space, offers free shows
BY JACKIE DEMALINE
The Cincinnati Enquirer
After seven years of construction, inconvenient parking and pedestrian detours through and around buildings, this fall the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music will unveil its $93.2 million campus village. As part of the unveiling, CCM will offer free admission to almost 1,000 events on its 1999-2000 calendar.
Admission will be charged to main stage productions of opera, musical theater and drama (titles to be announced), Feast of Carols and some special events. But hundreds of jazz, classical, choral and contemporary student and faculty performances will be free so the community can become reacquainted with CCM, said Dean Robert Werner.
The new complex, a combination of renovated buildings and new facilities, adds necessary and better academic space, the dean said. Construction will continue through the summer on the final components, a new studio theater and recital hall and the reconstruction of Mary Emery Hall and Plaza.
Another goal, Dean Werner said, is to improve the visibility of CCM in the community.
The complex dedication Dec. 3-5 will be accompanied by a gala performance hosted by Hugh Downs, co-host of ABC-TV's 20/20, and featuring guest conductor Erich Kunzel. Students from nearly all performing disciplines (dance, percussion, opera, choral, jazz, drama, piano and musical theater) will be featured. For gala ticket information (ranging from $150 to $35) call the CCM External Relations Office at 556-2100.
The weekend also will include an open house, public tours, mini-concerts in all performance spaces, a public forum with the project's lead architect, Henry N. Cobb, and the annual Feast of Carols.
Special events scheduled for 1999-2000 include:
Oct. 22-23 Regional conference The Role of the Arts in the Economic Development of Greater Cincinnati. It launches the Joan Cochran Rieveschl lecture series on Issues in the Arts.
Nov. 9-23 Contemporary Mexican Music Festival.
Jan. 14-16 The Ballet Ensemble in the full-length Coppelia.
Feb. 10-12 The National Opera Association conference featuring the premiere of the chamber opera Eve's Odds.
Feb. 24 The American Choral Directors conference.
April 15 The premiere of the winner of the Alexander Zemlinsky Composition Competition by Philharmonia Orchestra.
The entire CCM performance schedule will be announced in May. Printed calendars will be available in June by calling the box office at 556-4183.
