Two firefighters die in Boone National Forest blaze
The Associated Press
MOREHEAD, Ky. Two firefighters were killed Tuesday while battling a blaze in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky State Police said.
The firefighters were from the Cranston Fire Department, also known as the Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department. The department was one of several called to a fire in the Island Fork Road area in northern Rowan County on Tuesday afternoon, said Sgt. Lon Fields of the state police post in Morehead.
What actually happened, we're not sure now. That's still under investigation, Sgt. Fields said.
High winds may have worsened the fire, he said.
Kevin Smith, 30, and Kenneth Nickell, 28, both of More head, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were to be taken today to the state medical examiner's office in Frankfort for autopsies.
The fire, estimated to be about 300 acres, continued to burn Tuesday night, Sgt. Fields said.
