Speeches by retired Gen. Colin Powell and NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and the presentation of a national award to Cincinnati's United Way chapter will highlight the United Way of America's Community Leaders' Conference.
The three-day event, expected to attract the international participation of more than 2,500 United Way volunteers and staff, will begin Thursday at the Albert B. Sabin Cincinnati Convention Center.
The United Way & Community Chest will receive the fourth annual United Way of America's National Championing Diversity Award. It is presented to one of the United Way's 1,400 member organizations for outstanding leadership and commitment to managing diversity.
Being inclusive enables an organization to leverage differences as both a strength and competitive advantage, said United Way of America President Betty Beene. It is important to celebrate organizations like the United Way of Cincinnati where commitment to diversity serves as a model for the nation.
Dick Aft, United Way & Community Chest president, said to make the organization's goals a reality requires the participation of all people.
Cincinnati joins Houston, Los Angeles and Franklin County, Ohio (Columbus), in winning the diversity award.
The conference will bring together community leaders from the areas of religion, labor, business, education, government and non-profits to participate in 70 sessions.
They will attend sessions addressing how to help all children succeed in school, how to employ leadership strategies from the nation's most successful organizations and how to improve their local programs.
Gen. Powell is former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and creator of the volunteer organization America's Promise: The Alliance for Youth.
He was the featured speaker in May at the University of Cincinnati's Worldfest, which recognizes its international community.
Mr. Tagliabue, the commissioner of the National Football League, is also chairman of the Board of Governors of United Way of America.
Other keynote speakers will include John J. Sweeney, president of the AFL-CIO; Michael Treacy, co-author of The Discipline of Market Leaders; andAl Roker, of NBC-TV's Today Show; Ms. Beene; and Dimon R. McFerson, chairman-elect of the United Way of America Board of Governors and CEO of Nationwide Insurance.
During the 1997-1998 campaign, the 1,400-member United Way organizations raised and distributed $3.4 billion to more than 44,000 United Way agencies.
The 1998 local campaign raised a record $54,100,531.
