Bridge connects Covington, downtown

BY TANYA ALBERT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Get ready for a more direct link between Kentucky and downtown Cincinnati. After evening rush hour Wednesday — weather permitting — a temporary bridge extending the Roebling Suspension Bridge to Third Street in downtown Cincinnati opens to traffic.

map
The $1.2 million extension will be a two-way bridge that gives pedestrians and vehicles a direct link between the two sides of the Ohio River.

It will be a minor adjustment for the 23,000 drivers who use the bridge daily.

They no longer will have to use Cincinnati's Levee Way and the Race Street overpass to get to and from the bridge. But vehicles using the new connector still will be able to turn onto Levee Way and get to Pete Rose Way.

When the Suspension Bridge extension opens, the Race Street overpass will be closed and knocked down.

The last of the four original Fort Washington Way overpass bridges, it's a pivotal point in the $146.9 million reconstruction project — designed to narrow and improve safety on the highway stretching from the Brent Spence Bridge to the Lytle Tunnel.

When the Race Street overpass comes down, it will open the way for construction crews to focus on building the downtown expressway's four westbound lanes, said John Deatrick, an engineer with the city of Cincinnati.

The new Fort Washington Way is to open in August 2000. It will have overpass bridges with pedestrian crossings at Main, Walnut, Vine, Race and Elm streets.
