Former UC player returns to face assault charges

BY DAN HORN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Dontonio Wingfield is no longer a wanted man.

The former University of Cincinnati basketball player finally showed up in court Tuesday to face assault charges.

After Mr. Wingfield missed a court date two weeks ago, Judge David Davis issued a warrant for his arrest and seized the $30,000 bond that had kept him out of jail for the past year.

Mr. Wingfield returned to Cincinnati over the weekend and arrived Tuesday in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court with his attorney, Hal Arenstein.

Mr. Arenstein has said his client missed the early court dates because he was recently injured in a car accident in Georgia, where he has been living with his mother.

In court Tuesday, the judge withdrew the warrant and reinstated Mr. Wingfield's bond.

He also ordered Mr. Wingfield to return to court June 7 for another hearing on his assault case.

The case stems from an incident last year at the apartment of Mr. Wingfield's girlfriend, Kristina Cornett.

Police were called after Mr. Wingfield allegedly knocked over a table. When police arrived, prosecutors say, Mr. Wingfield grabbed Ms. Cornett's arm and then struggled with the officers. One of the officers suffered a broken finger.

Mr. Wingfield, 24, was a second-round NBA draft pick in 1994 after leaving UC. He was waived last year by the NBA Portland Trail Blazers.
