Alleged Milwaukee gang member arrested
An alleged gang member from Milwaukee was arrested in Cincinnati Monday on a homicide charge from Wisconsin.
Gregory Demone Bryant, 22, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide with gun specifications and is being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center awaiting transfer to Wisconsin.
Police say Mr. Bryant, part of a gang called the Gangster Disciples, went to a Milwaukee car wash Feb. 17 to shoot rival gang members. But police said one of his fellow gang members stood up while he was firing, and a shot hit him in the back of the head, killing him.
Suspect's shoe prints lead to his arrest
Police say Nathan McFarland had a robbery strategy that worked: He would go into a store, leap over the counter, threaten the clerk, grab cash and run.
His downfall was that he got sloppy, Cincinnati Police Detective Richard Wullenweber said.
A Marathon gas-station clerk recognized Mr. McFarland during a robbery last Tuesday in Avondale. Now Mr. McFarland faces two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of robbery.
One case was at an Avondale KFC restaurant and the other at Wendy's restaurant in Walnut Hills.
Mr. McFarland, 34, is a suspect in several similar cases, Detective Wullenweber said. One clue has been the shoe prints left on counters at the scene of the crimes, he said.
Mr. McFarland's last known address was the Spring Grove Program halfway house in Camp Washington. He is being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center in lieu of $150,000 bond.
A grand jury is scheduled to hear his case next to decide on indictments. Police are continuing to investigate whether he is linked to other robberies.
Girl, 13, faces charges in stabbing
A 13-year-old girl faces criminal charges after allegedly stabbing a 14-year-old girl with a steak knife Monday afternoon.
The stabbing happened about 1:50 p.m. on the 1800 block of Fairfax Avenue in Evanston. Police say the two girls were arguing and the younger girl pulled out a knife and cut the older girl in the face. She was treated at Children's Hospital Medical Center and released.
The 13-year-old faces juvenile charges of felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon and having a deadly weapon on school grounds. The stabbing did not happen on school property.
Police say the victim is expelled from Holmes High School in Covington. The suspect is enrolled at Parham Elementary in Evanston.
Warren County names acting treasurer
The Warren County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday appointed James LeFevers as acting treasurer for the county. Currently deputy treasurer, Mr. LeFevers will take the helm April 23, the same day current Treasurer Cicero Feltner officially resigns. Mr. Feltner announced his resignation last month after serving almost 24 years in the office, including six years in the top post. Mr. LeFevers will serve in the position until the Warren County Republican Central Committee appoints a replacement. A permanent successor will be elected in November 2000. The treasurer is responsible for handling all county funds, including property taxes and recorder's fees.
Teacher suspended because of word
LORAIN, Ohio A teacher who heard two youngsters using a racial slur repeated it disapprovingly and then found himself suspended and facing possible dismissal.
Terence Traut, a seventh-grade math teacher at Lorain Middle School who is white, heard a black and a Hispanic student calling each other the word and sent them to the principal's office, Superintendent Nicholas Hutlock said Tuesday. He said the word was slang popularized by some rap musicians but derived from the similar-sounding slur.
As they left, Mr. Traut repeated the word and told the class that it was stupid to use such language, Mr. Hutlock said. Mr. Traut repeated the comment again when one of the boys returned, the superintendent said.
I don't think it's a word that should be directed toward children, Mr. Hutlock said. I understand our children today say that to one another in a certain context, but I don't approve of that.
